As against Vladimir the topography of Suzdal was well kept. It first of all the Kremlin - the most ancient settlement, surrounded with earth ramparts and moats. Also defensive ramparts and a lay-out of new settlement were well enough kept. Therefore Suzdal serves as a unique sample of well kept medieval city.
Suzdal is located on the left coast of the river Kamenka. An landscape of Suzdal is flat, with soft heights. Frequently there are superficial ravines with small streamlets proceeding in their bottom. In many respects this landscape reminds southern forest-steppe areas. The sensation of open space and not striking beauty of natural landscape harmoniously incorporates here to creations of the person. The local landscape was used by Suzdal builders at a construction of city ramparts.
The research of east rampart has been carried out in 1970 by V.V.Sedov. It is established, that the rampart had height of 13 foots. Inside it there were the wooden constructions. Date of a rampart creation - first half 11 centuries - is determined on the ceramics met in its embankment.
The research of northern rampart has been made by A.Rappoport, who has come to a conclusion that a nucleus of Kremlin northern rampart has been erected in second half of 11 century. The second stage of construction was the strengthening of a rampart, executed at the end of 12 century. At last, to the third stage of construction of the Kremlin rampart of A.Rappoport has related an embankment, adjoining to the central rampart nucleus from a face sheet.
In 1978-1990 in a northeast corner of the Kremlin have been investigated lower layers of rampart. It was found out, that the rampart was made directly on a cultural layer of 10-11 centuries. The top part of it's layers have the rests of big fires, which confirm annalistic data on a fire in Suzdal in 109 year. Hence, the rampart was made after a fire, most likely, in 1101-1102 under Vladimir Monomach's, who has visited these years the northeast possession order.
At a lining of a rampart along river coast, the trench, into which have inserted logs a palings has been dug the ground. Vertically put logs meet and is higher, in a thickness of a rampart, forming as though the steps, fastening an embankment. Earthen strengthenings have captured all territory of the Kremlin at what the length of ramparts has made 4400 foots on perimeter. In reigning of Jury Dolgorukiy, when Suzdal becomes capital of princedoms the new line of strengthenings to northeast from the Kremlin is under construction. The earth rampart and moat encloses new settlement territory.
