The
Ascension Church was built in 1724 on the spot where the Monastery of the Ascension
used to stand in twelfth century. It has situated on the south-eastern edge of
old town. The original building was considerably altered by later additions, including
the bell tower.
Like the Church of Saint Nicholas
at the Galleys, and the Church of the Assumption, this
Church also shows clear evidence of architectural styles prevalent in the seventeenth
century, particularly in the kokoshniks
which crowned the walls and the richly carved window surrounds.
